University of Louisville Hospital: Leading the Way in Research, Education and Quality of Care

Today, our writer Dan Tepe shares with you just some of the many benefits we all receive by having an acclaimed teaching hospital right here in our region.

University of Louisville Hospital is one of only two academic medical centers, also known as teaching hospitals, in Kentucky. The other is University of Kentucky in Lexington.

The physicians that practice at University of Louisville Hospital and the James Graham Brown Cancer Center are professors at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. The nurses and physicians that practice here are active participants in leading-edge research to develop the best solutions for patient care.

In addition to teaching in the classroom and treating patients, they guide residents in their training in becoming the next generation of medical leaders.

But what are the benefits for our patients?

Some include:

  • Improved quality of care
  • New and unique treatments not available at other hospitals
  • State-of-the-art technologies
  • Multidisciplinary teams that combine many specialty areas to provide comprehensive levels of care

These qualities fulfill our mission to be a community resource that benefits patients in Louisville, the region and the entire state of Kentucky.

With all the great things happening at U of L , why, at the HHS website hospital compare, U of L Hospital received very low marks in Patients who reported that they "Always" received help as soon as they wanted. Is this due to cutbacks in personnel? This is something U of L must work on, I am sure you have teams working on it, but it is quite disturbing that a hospital of this caliber could get such a low score.

    Hi Lawrence,

Thank you for your question. We appreciate you taking the time to read our blog and to write us.

The data that is posted on Hospital Compare is always approximately one year old. So, when you are looking at the scores today, you are seeing data from patients discharged between July 2009 – June 2010. This is how CMS collects the data.

With that in mind, we agree that our scores are a work in process. In the last year we have continued to improve the experience of our patients and their families. Patient satisfaction remains a top priority for the 3000+ employees of UofL HealthCare. Although we’ve made great strides, the work continues into 2011 and beyond.

    Thank you,
    Melissa
