Dr. Goetz Klocker’s Story: Pieces of a Whole

Hanging in the conference room of the James Graham Brown Cancer Center is a series of illustrations titled "Pieces of a Whole." It represents how every part of a system is vital and should be recognized as such. There is no better way to describe Dr. Goetz Kloecker and the environment he has created for his colleagues and patients.

Dr. Kloecker elicits praise by living his creed that medical care is best accomplished through a team approach. Described by colleagues and patients as a scientist, teacher, superhero and mentor, Dr. Kloecker is clearly a consummate professional who values the role that each person plays in the care of a patient. Through his emphasis on active learning, everyone on the team is able to empower patients, remove barriers to care and help each one of the patients on their personal journey.

Dr. Kloecker, M.D., M.B.A., M.S.P.H., F.A.C.P., holds many titles; Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, Division of Medical Oncology/Hematology, Director, Medical Oncology/Hematology Fellowship Program, and Associate Member, James Graham Brown Cancer Center. But, the most important title he carries isn't one that applies to his standings within the hospital. It's the one that runs congruently through his staff, colleagues and patients – friend.

Over the coming weeks, you will have an opportunity to read stories about and insights into Dr. Kloecker as a physician and friend from doctors, nurses, administrative staff and patients.

    Many years ago when I worked in the Dept of Medicine, Dr. Kloecker was in the residency program. I always felt he was special and that if I ever needed a doctor with his specialty, I would become his patient. His gentle, caring, knowledgeable manner was outstanding even then.
