Legacy of Life Walk Honors Organ Donor Families and Recipients

Terry Meiners and Rachel Platt of WHAS -TV's Great Day Live program, welcomed donor mom Donna Murrell and her daughter's kidney recipient, Ashley Schmitt.

When the unthinkable happened last year and Donna Murrell’s daughter, Natasha, was in a boating accident and Donna was told she was not going to survive, Donna did not hesitate to think about organ donation. She knew her daughter, Natasha, who was studying to be a nurse, would want to make that sacrifice in order to save other lives.

In fact, Natasha’s spirit has lived on – through the life of three different transplant recipients who received her organs. One of those, Ashley Schmitt, 24, was recently able to meet Donna, her donor’s mom, for the first time. The two were featured on WHAS’s Great Day Live on Tuesday, September 11, and told their story of that first connection.

Together, the two will be one of many organ donor families and recipients walking together at the Legacy of Life Organ Donation Walk/5K Race on Saturday, September 22 at Iroquois Park. The walk is sponsored by University of Louisville Hospital, and will raise funds for a planned memorial that will be built on the hospital campus to honor organ donors and their recipients.

Lindsey Siewert, clinical nurse specialist for the hospital, is helping to coordinate the walk and says that about 300 participants are expected.  The registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the 5K race/walk begins at 8:00 a.m. For more information or to register, visit University of Louisville Hospital website.
